Yoga Breathing: How Kapalbhati's Three Forms Support Health
Breathing exercises have long played a central role in yoga, and Kapalbhati Pranayama is among the most discussed. This cleansing practice is built around quick, forceful exhalations and is valued for its ability to support the body and quiet the mind at the same time.
The Ministry of Ayush has outlined three forms of Kapalbhati that are associated with reducing kapha doshas and purifying the body. These are Vatkram, Vyutkram and Shitkram Kapalbhati. Each form has a different technique and a different focus, and together they offer a broad approach to wellness.
Vatkram Kapalbhati is the original and most familiar version, practiced in the style of a standard pranayama. It is believed to enhance lung function and may ease cold, rhinitis, sinusitis and asthma. Active contraction of the abdominal muscles is said to ignite digestive fire, which can aid digestion and assist in managing obesity and diabetes.
Regular practice is also linked with a stronger nervous system, sharper mental clarity and better control over the default mode network.
Vyutkram Kapalbhati relies on water. It is a cleansing method, or shodhan, in which lukewarm salt water is pulled through the nostrils and released through the mouth. Practitioners are said to experience relief from sinus problems over time, including common cold, sinusitis and rhinitis. The practice is also believed to stimulate the front portion of the skull, which may improve mental focus and give the face a natural glow.
Shitkram Kapalbhati reverses this process. Lukewarm water is held in the mouth and then pushed out through the nostrils. It is considered very effective against all kapha doshas in the head and respiratory system. Yogic beliefs hold that consistent practice can help reduce facial wrinkles and bring a natural shine to the skin. It is also said to clear the nasal passage thoroughly and expel excess mucus from the airways.
The Ministry of Ayush notes that Kapalbhati is chiefly a valuable technique for cleansing the skull and upper respiratory tract. It is said to remove 20 types of kapha doshas, raise lung capacity and provide notable benefits to people living with diabetes or obesity.
