Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh has been placed under house arrest in Jammu and Kashmir. The action was taken to prevent him from holding a protest against the detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik. Singh, an AAP Lok Sabha MP, had strongly criticized Malik’s detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA), calling it illegal and unconstitutional. Singh and Jammu and Kashmir in-charge Imran Hussain were confined to a guest house in Srinagar. Singh intended to hold a press conference to address Malik’s arrest but was prevented from doing so. Singh himself shared the news of his house arrest on X (formerly Twitter), also mentioning that Dr. Farooq Abdullah, a former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, was denied access to meet him. Singh stated that he was in Srinagar to protest the arrest of Mehraj Malik and that he believes it is his constitutional right to speak out for his rights. He also stated that he believes the government had made the guest house a police cantonment.
