Ajoy UP Chief Accuses West Bengal Police of Partisan Arrests Before By‑Election

Kolkata – Humayun Kabir, the chairman of the All India Jana Unnayan Party (Ajoy UP) and a West Bengal MLA, staged a sit‑in protest on Thursday outside the Rejinagar police station in Murshidabad district. Kabir accused the police of working in the interest of the ruling party by arresting opposition activists and restricting their ability to campaign for the pending by‑election.

The protester placed a single chair at the station's main gate and warned that his supporters would also demonstrate on October 6, the day of the by‑poll, if conditions did not improve. Kabir claimed that rival party workers were granted permission to hold rallies, while Ajoy UP volunteers were told to leave the vicinity.

He listed several recent detentions, naming Mansur Rahman (alias Lebu), Hak Mallik, Abdul Alim and Shakil Shaikh as examples of the police targeting his organization. Kabir added that Mohammad Naseem Sheikh, a close associate, had been taken into custody from Shaktipur.

Kabir said he would remain outside the police station until 8 a.m. on Friday, accompanied by a female leader from his party. He referenced a prior protest at Shaktipur police station on September 13, indicating a pattern of alleged police pressure.

The opposition figure has already forwarded a letter to the Election Commission, asserting that the superintendent of Bherampur police district is attempting to manipulate the election outcome. Kabir noted that he had previously won both the Rejinagar and Nadda assembly constituencies, later stepping down from Rejinagar and fielding his son as the candidate for the upcoming by‑election.
