The Gauhati High Court has ordered the immediate release of Aminul Islam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Dhing constituency representing the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Islam has been in detention for over seven months under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). A division bench comprising Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Suresh Majumdar quashed the detention order, paving the way for his release after the completion of necessary legal formalities. Islam was initially arrested on April 14 following remarks that were widely criticized as inflammatory and anti-national. The controversy escalated after statements where he allegedly linked terror attacks in Pahalgam and Pulwama to a government conspiracy, even naming top leaders. These statements drew severe condemnation, with accusations of inciting communal tensions and threatening national security. A surfaced video purportedly showing him defending perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack was cited by the police as a primary reason for invoking the NSA. The Nagaon Superintendent of Police confirmed this footage was crucial to the detention order. While the AIUDF distanced itself from the remarks, calling them inappropriate, the High Court’s decision effectively ends Islam’s incarceration.
