A shocking incident has gripped Austria’s medical community after a senior neurosurgeon was arrested on allegations of allowing her 12-year-old daughter to participate in a delicate brain surgery. The procedure took place on January 13, 2024, at Graz Regional Hospital. The patient, a 33-year-old man, was undergoing a complex operation when the alleged involvement of the child occurred. Reports suggest the surgeon handed her daughter a surgical drill, instructing her to make an incision in the patient’s skull for a probe. This astonishing claim is further compounded by the surgeon’s alleged prior statement that her daughter had previously performed a gynecological hysterectomy. While the surgery was reportedly completed successfully, the patient’s lawyer highlighted the extreme potential for catastrophic outcomes. The defense has offered a contrasting narrative, with one lawyer admitting the child’s presence was improper but denying she actually used the drill. Another legal representative for the surgeon stated she was unaware of the child’s age. Both the neurosurgeon and an assisting doctor are facing charges related to minor physical injury, which they vehemently deny. The assistant doctor’s testimony indicated that the child was allowed to place her hand on the drill under supervision while the surgeon was briefly away. The next court hearing is scheduled for December 10, with the case continuing to draw significant international attention.
