In a strategic move ahead of the Bihar elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a free electricity scheme, offering up to 125 units of power without charge to domestic consumers. This initiative, effective from the July 2025 billing cycle, is designed to benefit approximately 1.67 crore families across the state. Kumar revealed the plan via social media, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing affordable electricity. The scheme also includes provisions for solar power installations on rooftops or public spaces within the next three years. The government will fully subsidize solar plant installations for low-income families and offer support for others. This will eliminate electricity costs for eligible consumers, potentially generating up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy in the state within three years. The Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, encompassing all 243 constituencies, are scheduled for October or November 2025. Notably, the JD(U) under Nitish Kumar has shifted alliances, most recently aligning with the BJP after previously partnering with the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan.
