Assam Red Alert Signals Renewed Flood Threat; Assam Faces Rising Death Toll

Assam’s disaster management officials have escalated the situation to a red alert, signalling an imminent flood emergency. After days of heavy rain, water levels in major rivers have surged once more, re‑submerging low‑lying areas that were beginning to recede.

The renewed onslaught has claimed 97 lives across the state, with fifteen districts bearing the brunt of the devastation. More than 1,68,000 people have been reported severely affected, many displaced from their homes and in need of relief supplies.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local NGOs are conducting evacuation drives, while the state government has opened additional relief camps to accommodate displaced families.

Authorities stress the importance of adhering to evacuation orders and avoiding flood‑prone zones, as further rain is forecast for the next 48 hours, potentially worsening the situation.
