Fastag System to Collect Toll on Bihar’s Upcoming Bridge and Highway Charges
A Fastag‑centric toll system is set to launch in Bihar, targeting 47 long‑span bridges and 55 state highways that serve as vital cargo corridors. The project aims to digitise fee collection, cut down on manual labor at plazas and provide real‑time data for traffic management.
Before finalising the plan, state officials toured Rajasthan in late September 2026 to observe how that state runs low‑cost toll plazas equipped with electronic readers. The visit included senior officials from the Bihar State Bridge Construction Limited, the Public Works Department and the State Road Development Corporation, all of whom contributed to the cost‑control framework.
The Fastag requirement means each commercial vehicle will be automatically charged as it passes a sensor‑enabled booth. Fee schedules are being drafted, with specific rates for trucks, buses and heavy‑load carriers, while certain vehicles will qualify for discounts. A budget of ₹30.94 crore was approved to cover the installation of hardware, software licensing and ongoing monitoring.
Industry stakeholders anticipate a rise in operating expenses for freight and passenger bus services. By contrast, private passenger cars and two‑wheelers remain exempt. Full details, including the effective date and the exact tariff grid, will be published once the official notification is issued.
