Cabinet Approves Toll Collection on State Highways and Bypass Roads

In a recent cabinet meeting, Bihar’s ministers gave the green light to extend toll collection beyond bridges to include specific stretches of state highways and bypasses. The move mirrors the national highway model, where tolls fund continuous road upgrades.

The approved "Path User Fee Rules‑2026" empower the state to levy charges on vehicles using these routes, subject to periodic review. The revenue will be channeled into regular maintenance, resurfacing projects and the installation of safety features.

Officials noted that the new policy will create a reliable funding pool, reducing reliance on ad‑hoc budgeting for road works. The rollout will be phased, with the first toll plazas expected to open after the announcement of the detailed fee structure.
