Community Outraged as Authorities Turn a Blind Eye to Female Abuse
The village of Pachrukhi in Shahkund tehsil has become the focus of a heated debate after a woman was allegedly assaulted for being called a witch. Tara Devi, the victim, says four men – Basuki Ram, Bori Ram, Bijli Ram and Bablu Ram – assaulted her, attempted to strip her, and threatened her with lethal violence.
When police arrived, reports indicate that instead of conducting a proper forensic examination, they requested the victim’s blessings and encouraged onlookers to do the same. The police’s unconventional response has been condemned as a dereliction of duty.
Local residents, women's groups, and legal advocates have expressed deep concern, insisting that such behaviour emboldens perpetrators and erodes public trust in law‑enforcement institutions. They are calling for swift arrests, medical care for the survivor, and a judicial process that holds the culprits accountable.
The episode underscores the urgent need for sensitisation training among officers and stronger mechanisms to protect women in remote areas of Bihar.
