E20, a blend containing 20% ethanol, promises a higher octane rating, smoother combustion and cleaner engine performance. The ministry highlighted that the blend can cut carbon emissions by roughly 40% compared with conventional gasoline. However, delivering E20 nationwide demands new storage tanks, upgraded pipelines and specialised loading equipment. Without these investments, trying to revert to lower ethanol blends after infrastructure is built could jeopardise already‑made investments. The government’s stance is that the long‑term energy strategy prioritises energy security, reduced oil imports and support for farmers who produce ethanol, while also meeting emission targets.
