Error in Popular Children’s Poem Sparks Debate on Textbook Quality

The inclusion of an inappropriate word in the line of “Chanda Mama Door Ke” has ignited a nationwide discussion on the standards of school textbooks.

NCERT’s Hindi textbook for first‑standard students, part of the Sargam series, was first released in 2023. The poem, a staple in many classrooms, allegedly replaces the word “gud” with a profane expression, prompting a public‑interest suit.

The petitioner purchased a copy from Gyan Ganga Book Depot in Patna on 21 July 2026, identified the mistake, and filed a petition in the Patna High Court. The suit argues that the oversight reflects a deeper issue in the proofreading and approval processes of educational content.

The High Court bench, led by Chief Justice V. Kameshwar Rao and Justice Sudhir Singh, has asked the Union Ministry of Education to file an affidavit detailing how the error occurred and what corrective measures will be taken. A follow‑up hearing is scheduled for 13 October 2026.

Stakeholders, including teachers and child‑development experts, stress that early‑grade textbooks form the foundation of literacy. Any error, especially one of a sensitive nature, demands swift correction to preserve the integrity of the learning environment.
