Government Pushes More Sugar Imports Amid Falling Local Prices

The central government has urged port‑based refineries to increase sugar imports to help ease domestic price pressures. It also extended the application window for the advance authorisation scheme, converting it into a one‑time Tariff Rate Quota. This move lets eligible refineries that regularly import raw sugar process and re‑export it, while also allowing them to sell the refined product domestically under a specified quota.
