India Prepares Largest Foreign Investment in Banking Sector
The impending sale of a 60.7% stake in IDBI Bank to Fairfax Financial could mark the largest foreign capital inflow into the Indian banking industry. Valued at roughly USD 5.7 billion, the transaction would set a new benchmark for overseas investors.
The bid highlights the attractiveness of India’s financial landscape, where rising incomes and a surging demand for credit have drawn interest from global lenders. In recent years, Japanese banking conglomerates have also invested heavily in Indian banks through strategic stake purchases.
Fairfax’s interest is driven by the bank’s recent turnaround. After years of struggling with high non-performing assets, IDBI Bank has returned to profitability thanks to capital injections and improved loan recoveries.
