The Ganga River in Katihar, Bihar, is overflowing. Heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding have submerged the entire area. Medinipur village in the Raj Baghar Panchayat of the Manihari subdivision is currently bearing the brunt of the flood’s devastation. The situation is so dire that people are forced to spend their nights on makeshift rubber tube boats. All the houses in the village have been swallowed by the Ganga.
Villagers have taken shelter on the upper floors of a submerged school. Sixteen other surrounding panchayats have also been inundated by the Ganga’s waters. There is only one boat available for entering and exiting the village, which hundreds of people are using in turns. The people are pleading for help from the government, but so far, no assistance has been received.
