Fire Destroys Dozens of Shops at Patna's Khemnichak Market
Early this morning, a powerful fire tore through the Khemnichak vegetable market in Ramkrishnanagar, Patna. Shortly after 4 am, while residents were sleeping, flames began spreading across the market, and within a few minutes the entire area was covered in dense smoke.
At least three dozen shops were gutted in the blaze. Among the affected establishments were beauty parlour supplies, mobile repair outlets, and food stalls. The fire spread so rapidly that many shopkeepers had no time to respond. Confusion and fear spread as people tried to get to safety, and a few brave traders made efforts to protect their stock, though the flames proved too strong.
A chain of explosions followed when four gas cylinders in a hut-style hotel within the market blew up one after another. The sound of the blasts and the rising fire created widespread alarm, and several motorcycles nearby were burned as well.
The fire department responded quickly, deploying between 10 and 15 vehicles. Firefighters concentrated on keeping the fire from reaching surrounding residential areas and continued spraying water. After about an hour of hard work, the blaze was contained. However, a large part of the market had already been reduced to ruins.
Affected traders were seen grieving as they surveyed what remained of their shops. For several small businesses, years of hard work vanished in a few hours, creating a serious crisis for their families. The total financial damage and the losses to vehicles are still being calculated.
For now, the cause of the fire has not been established, and the administration is conducting an inquiry. Only after the investigation will it be clear whether a short circuit or carelessness triggered the disaster. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about fire protection in crowded markets.
