Love Promise Turned Trap: Police Rescue Motihari Teen

A story that started with a promise of love and marriage ended in a dangerous trafficking trap, and police say it could have ended far worse. A young woman from Motihari was rescued from a red-light area in Panjipara, West Bengal, after her mother's complaint set off a coordinated search.

The young woman had known Rohit, who lived in her neighbourhood, for some time. Their conversations gradually grew closer, and Rohit assured her he would marry her. Trusting him, she decided to leave home.

Rohit told her to meet him at platform number one of Muzaffarpur railway station. She reached on time, but Rohit never showed up. Two young men arrived in his place and said he had sent them to bring her. Hearing his name, she went with them.

That trip became the most damaging betrayal of her life. The two men took her from Muzaffarpur to Purnia and handed her to a woman named Rani, who lived in Zero Mile Qabristan Tola. They sold the young woman to Rani for Rs 2 lakh. Rani promised her that she would be married to Rohit the next day. After she ate the food she was given at night, she became unconscious. When she woke up, she was in a red-light area in West Bengal.

In Panjipara, Rani sold her to a woman called Lucky for Rs 3 lakh. Soon, pressure to engage in prostitution began.

Trapped and frightened, the young woman managed to call her mother and ask for help. She told her she was being forced into illegal work. Before she could explain more, the call was cut off. The mother was overwhelmed, did not know where her daughter was, and had only the mobile number. She reached Kesariya police station and explained everything, pleading for help.

Station House Officer Rahul took the matter seriously and formed a special team consisting of Sub-Inspector Manoj Thakur, Rajkumar Raju, Sonu Kumar and woman constable Sunita Kumari. A technical examination of the mobile number revealed that the signal was in the Panjipara red-light area of West Bengal. The team, along with the young woman's father, set out for West Bengal and took help from local police once they arrived.

The real challenge was to identify the young woman in a crowded red-light area and bring her out without putting anyone at risk. Sub-Inspector Manoj Thakur went in wearing plain clothes. A middleman came up to him and asked what kind of girl he wanted. He offered to show the area for Rs 50, and Thakur paid him.

The middleman led him through several narrow lanes. After the third lane, Thakur pointed out a young woman as the girl he wanted. He was then taken to the brothel operator, Lucky.

Lucky first demanded Rs 2,000 for the girl. Thakur said he would pay Rs 500. After a long negotiation, they agreed on Rs 1,000. When Thakur tried to go inside, Lucky asked him to deposit his mobile phone. He refused, and a heated exchange followed. Thakur kept Lucky engaged while the rest of the team moved in with local police.

The moment police action began, the area erupted in chaos as people ran in all directions. Thakur entered the building and brought the young woman out safely. The team then returned to Motihari with her.

Based on her statement, serious charges have been filed against Rohit, his associates and other accused. What began as a promise of marriage turned into a case of sale and exploitation, bringing a serious human trafficking network into the open.
