Satellites Reveal 10,000‑km Rain Cloud Stretching From Himalayas to South Korea
Recent satellite animations released by the India Meteorological Department depict an extraordinary rain cloud extending nearly 10,000 kilometres across the Asian continent. Originating over the northern Indian subcontinent, the cloud ribbon traverses the Himalayas, sweeps across China and reaches the Korean Peninsula.
The formation is identified as the Monsoon Convergence Zone, a meteorological phenomenon where moisture from the Indian Ocean merges with large‑scale wind patterns over Asia. This creates a continuous band of high‑altitude clouds that greatly enhances the potential for heavy precipitation.
Experts explain that such a massive cloud structure is a hallmark of an aggressive southwest monsoon season. The IMD warned that the convergence zone is likely to feed additional rain into already saturated regions of India, amplifying the risk of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable districts.
