A minor girl in Bihar was forced into a child marriage by her parents to settle a debt. The girl, aged 16 and a half years, was married to a 33-year-old man. Following the marriage, she faced abuse from her husband and in-laws, and her education was halted. She was also restricted from visiting her parental home. Seeking help, she fled with a friend and filed a petition in the Supreme Court to annul the marriage.
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Bihar government regarding the petition against the forced marriage. The court has also requested status reports from the Bihar government and the Delhi Police. The DGP of Bihar and the Delhi Commissioner have been ordered to provide security to the girl and her friend. The petition highlights that the girl was forcibly married to a 33-year-old man against her will to continue her education. She was subjected to physical and mental harassment in her marital home.
