A tragic accident occurred in the Katihar district of Bihar during preparations for a program by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Two laborers were killed when a speeding SUV hit them while they were setting up barricades on the roadside. The incident took place in the Kurseela police station area, near NH 31’s Vishahari Sthan. The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Hanif (48) and Mohammad Gulzar (24). The accident happened around 4 am when a speeding SUV, attempting to overtake a truck, struck the two workers who were working on the roadside. The impact was so severe that the laborers were thrown into the air before landing on the road. The SUV then fled the scene, running over the victims. The two workers died at the scene. Angered by the incident, fellow laborers blocked NH 31, causing a complete traffic jam on the Purnia-Barauni route. Police and senior officials arrived at the scene and managed to calm the workers, clearing the road. The workers had been demanding compensation for their deceased colleagues and the highway blockade continued for approximately 2 hours. The deceased were uncle and nephew. Police took possession of the bodies and sent them to Katihar for post-mortem. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was scheduled to visit Sameli in the Katihar district on September 27 to inaugurate the statue of Katihar Sahitya Ratna Anoop Lal Mandal and various other projects. The preparations were underway for this visit when the unfortunate accident took place.
