BJP Stresses Democratic Rights, Rejects Accusations of Provocation

Kolkata, September 23 — In a press briefing following the Mukundpur melee that left several people injured, senior BJP leader Jitendra Tiwari defended the party’s stance on democratic freedoms. He affirmed that the BJP does not support any form of physical assault or the curtailment of a citizen’s democratic entitlement.

Tiwari highlighted that a minority of actors in recent history have behaved in ways that triggered public fury, resulting in widespread condemnation. He warned against vigilantism, insisting that law‑enforcement agencies must act within the legal framework to curb anti‑social conduct.

Addressing the attack on former minister Humayun Kabir, Tiwari said that violence against any individual is antithetical to democratic values and that the party will not back such conduct. He accused some political figures of engineering sensational incidents for personal visibility, which only serves to inflame public sentiment.

The spokesperson added that the BJP may regulate its own volunteers, but it cannot dictate public opinion. He urged all political stakeholders to exercise restraint, allowing judicial mechanisms to resolve disputes.
