A heated confrontation unfolded during a meeting of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, leading to the removal of several councillors by marshals. Opposition councillors voiced their dissent with slogans against the BJP Mayor. The situation escalated, prompting the expulsion of councillors from the House. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors alleged the Mayor was acting arbitrarily. The Mayor responded by stating the need to remove councillors who tore copies of the meeting minutes and threw them at her.
AAP and Congress councillors accused the Mayor of preparing the previous House meeting minutes in a biased manner. They alleged that AAP and Congress councillors were unnecessarily removed by marshals during the meeting. The meeting was marked by intense disruptions for approximately an hour. The situation further deteriorated when Congress councillors tore copies of the previous meeting’s minutes and threw them at the Mayor’s table. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla ordered the removal of councillors who were involved in the disruption and the tearing of the minutes.
In addition to the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor Jasvir Singh Banti, Deputy Mayor Tarun Mehta, and councillor Premlata were also ordered to be removed from the House for tearing the minutes. The ensuing chaos escalated the situation, leading to the intervention of marshals. The Corporation’s proceedings were temporarily suspended for 10 minutes.
