The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has voiced its concern and distress regarding the arrest of two Catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district on charges of human trafficking and forced conversion. The CBCI condemned the arrests, highlighting a growing environment of hostility and violence against minority communities. Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, speaking at a press conference in Delhi, warned of the erosion of constitutional values and the increasing communalization of democratic institutions. The CBCI’s statement emphasized the deep pain and worry over the escalating animosity and violence targeting minorities in the country. The arrests followed allegations of human trafficking and forced conversions. The Archbishop also referenced a controversial statement by a Maharashtra BJP MLA offering rewards for those who assault individuals involved in conversions, which the CBCI deemed inflammatory. The CBCI noted that the police had not filed an FIR against the MLA, whereas swift legal action is frequently taken against students, activists, and opposition leaders for less severe expressions like social media posts or peaceful dissent. The CBCI further addressed the arrest of the nuns, describing the incident as troubling, alleging that the arrests were orchestrated by communal elements. The CBCI called upon the Indian government and all political parties to uphold constitutional values and protect the nation and its people.
