Chhattisgarh preparing to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC), suggestions sought till October 15

Raipur, August 04, 2026/

The Chhattisgarh government is rapidly moving towards implementing the 'Uniform Civil Code' (UCC) in the state. A special 5-member high-level committee has been formed with the objective of bringing all citizens under a uniform ambit of the constitution in place of religion-based personal laws. This committee has now invited suggestions and opinions from the general public, various organizations, and stakeholders to decide what the new law in the state should be like.

Structure and Members of the Committee

This committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, is conducting a comprehensive study and review of the need for UCC in Chhattisgarh, its framework, and existing laws related to personal civil matters. The committee includes retired Indian Administrative Service officers Shri Shatrughan Singh and Shri M.K. Raut, senior advocate Shri Mohan Pawar, and retired Principal Mrs. Jyoti Rani Singh as members.

Key Functions and Responsibilities of the Committee

This committee is conducting an in-depth study of all legal, social, and administrative aspects related to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Its key responsibilities include analyzing the current legal status in Chhattisgarh and preparing practical suggestions on sensitive issues such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, succession, and adoption. Additionally, the committee will conduct a detailed study of UCC systems implemented in other states and will also incorporate suggestions and opinions received from common citizens, social organizations, legal experts, and various stakeholders into the draft. The primary objective of the committee is to prepare a comprehensive draft based on all these studies and suggestions and present it to the state government, along with making necessary legislative and administrative recommendations.

Chhattisgarh to become the 5th state in the country

Uttarakhand was the first state in the country to implement UCC. Besides this, it has also been implemented in Goa, Gujarat, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh. In this sequence, Chhattisgarh is set to become the 5th state in the country to adopt UCC.

Means for Sending Suggestions

The committee has appealed to all citizens, including government and non-government organizations, social groups, religious institutions, communities, and political parties, to submit their views and opinions by October 15, 2026. Citizens can send their suggestions through the following means:
