Chhattisgarh Village Marks Diwali One Week Before National Date

As nationwide preparations for Dhanteras and Diwali unfold for an November 8 celebration, residents of Semra-C in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district have already completed their rituals. This distant village, positioned 22 kilometers away from the district capital, upholds an extraordinary custom of marking major holidays seven days in advance.

On November 3, local residents illuminated their homes with traditional lamps, performed rituals dedicated to Lakshmi and Ganesh, and welcomed the occasion with pyrotechnic displays. Rather than a one-off deviation, this early scheduling applies to core celebrations like Holi, Pola, and Harali throughout the year.

Archaeological and oral traditions link this distinctive calendar shift to a period of severe ecological danger. Historically, the settlement was bounded by dense wilderness that harbored fierce fauna. A brave local defender, identified as Siridar, sacrificed himself to shield the community from relentless animal attacks.

Following his death, the village priesthood reported a supernatural encounter wherein Siridar Dev appeared in a dream. The celestial figure explicitly ordered that upcoming festivities be rescheduled to an earlier timeframe to secure the community's prosperity. Generations have faithfully maintained this early observance.

Consequently, what began as a localized tradition has grown into a significant cultural gathering. The premature Diwali celebrations attract enthusiastic crowds from a network of 15 to 20 surrounding settlements. Visitors arriving from as far as Rajnandgaon frequently outnumber the permanent residents, creating a densely populated and joyous festival atmosphere.
