An explosion at the Chirmiri open-cast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district has left three workers, including two women, injured. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon while the team was preparing for a routine blasting operation. According to SECL officials, the blast happened unexpectedly as the workers were returning to a safe distance after laying explosives on the coal bed.
The explosion sent rock fragments flying, striking the workers and nearby vehicles. The injured were promptly transported to the SECL regional hospital in Kurasia, Chirmiri, where they are reported to be in stable condition and receiving treatment. Officials stated that the injuries sustained are minor and the workers are expected to be discharged soon.
A preliminary investigation suggests a possible technical fault may have caused the premature detonation. However, an internal probe has been launched by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) to ascertain the exact cause. This investigation will examine potential factors such as equipment malfunction, procedural errors, or human error. The mine site has been secured, and operations have been temporarily suspended pending safety assessments. The company and district administration are reviewing safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
