From Coal to Semiconductors: Chhattisgarh’s Diversified Growth Plan

RAYPUR — Historically known for its coal mines and steel mills, Chhattisgarh is now expanding its industrial canvas. The latest Industrial Development Policy, effective from November 2024, has attracted investment proposals amounting to more than ₹8 lakh crore across both legacy and futuristic sectors.

The new pipeline includes semiconductor fabrication units, AI‑enabled data‑centres, green‑steel complexes, and advanced pharmaceutical plants. Such diversification is expected to reduce the state’s reliance on traditional minerals while creating a broader array of skilled jobs. Government officials estimate that the forthcoming projects could generate between 172,000 and 190,000 employment opportunities, supplemented by a ₹15,000 training grant per worker.

To make the investment climate more business‑friendly, Chhattisgarh launched a one‑click Single Window 2.0 system that has already simplified over 450 processes. This digital gateway accelerates approvals for land, environmental clearances and other statutory requirements, cutting bureaucracy and encouraging faster project rollout.

In addition to the industrial push, the state has set an ambitious steel output target of 45 million tonnes by 2030 and a goal of fostering 5,000 startups. Special attention is being given to the Bastar division, where tourism, forest produce and handicraft‑based industries are being integrated into the broader growth narrative.
