Come Forward in the Fight Against TB, Become a Patient's Hope

In Jashpur, Niranjan is providing nutritional support by adopting 19 patients from Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) and 60 TB patients.

Raipur, TB is not just a disease. It is a challenge linked to poverty, malnutrition, and social neglect, which pushes thousands of families into economic and mental distress every year. When a person suffers from TB, they face not only the challenge of taking medication but also numerous difficulties such as arranging nutritious food, continuing regular treatment, and fighting social discrimination. This is why the concept of "Nixhay Mitra" has been given special importance in the nationwide Prime Minister TB Free India campaign.

Experts believe that adequate nutrition is as essential for TB treatment as medication. However, this becomes the biggest challenge for remote and economically weaker families. Many patients abandon treatment midway simply because they cannot arrange for nutritious food. At such times, Nixhay Mitras not only provide nutritional support but also strengthen the morale of the patients.

An equally inspiring story has emerged from Jashpur district in Chhattisgarh. Niranjan Prasad Gupta, District Data Manager working with the National Health Mission, who works in the field of health and social awareness among particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTG) living in remote and inaccessible areas of the district, took on the responsibility of Nixhay Mitra from October 2024. He not only adopted 19 TB patients from the PVTG community but also provided regular nutritional diet and essential support to a total of 60 TB patients in the district, supporting them on the path to treatment.

Ensuring TB prevention, timely detection, and treatment among particularly vulnerable tribal communities like Pahadi Korwa and Birhor in Jashpur has always been challenging. Due to limited access to health services in such areas, patients often delay treatment. Keeping these circumstances in mind, patients were provided nutritional support, health counseling, and continuous guidance, which ensured continuity of treatment.

Niranjan Gupta's initiative was not limited to nutritional kits. He personally visited homes and provided detailed information to patients and their families about the symptoms of TB, regular medication intake, prevention of infection, and the importance of completing treatment. The positive impact of this continuous dialogue was increased trust in health services within the community, and people started reaching health institutions on their own.

Just as medicines and diagnostics are important in the fight against TB, so are nutrition and social support. Malnutrition and TB are linked in a vicious cycle: malnutrition increases the disease, and the disease increases malnutrition. In such a scenario, the nutritional support provided by Nixhay Mitras plays a crucial role in boosting the patient's immunity and making the treatment successful. For these commendable efforts, Niranjan Gupta was honored with the State-Level Nixhay Mitra Award in December 2024.

The goal of a TB-free India is not just the goal of the health department. It is the responsibility of every person in society who can bring about a positive change in the life of someone in need. This initiative from Jashpur shows that even one person, if they come forward with sensitivity, can ignite new hope in the lives of dozens of families. Today, there is a need for more and more citizens, organizations, and social groups to join this national campaign by becoming Nixhay Mitras, so that no TB patient is deprived of treatment due to lack of resources.
