Discussions held with various organizations and social representatives for public opinion on Uniform Civil Code

Raipur, September 11, 2026/ Prior to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, a high-level committee constituted at the state level organized a two-day meeting from September 10 for detailed discussions and suggestions. In this meeting, chaired by former senior Indian Administrative Service officer and committee member Shri M. K. Raut, information about the current rules and laws of the Uniform Civil Code was provided through a PPT. Senior advocate and committee member Shri Mohan Pawar was also present on this occasion.

The two-day consultative meeting organized by the state-level committee constituted for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Chhattisgarh concluded successfully in the assembly hall of the old circuit house. During this period, committee members held detailed discussions with various social organizations, public representatives, and heads of state commissions. Over the two days of intensive brainstorming, suggestions were openly sought from all parties, primarily on sensitive and important topics such as marriage and divorce, succession and inheritance, maintenance, and live-in relationships.

During this time, Shri Gajanan Nurooti, Provincial Secretary of the Gondi Dharma Sanskriti Sanrakshan Samiti, prominently raised the issue of protecting the customary traditions and distinct cultural fabric of the tribal society. He formally requested that the tribal community be kept separate from the purview of the Uniform Civil Code to safeguard their fundamental identity and rights. On the other hand, Shri Amarjeet Singh Chhabra, Chairman of the State Minority Commission, strongly advocated for gender equality in society. He suggested making concrete efforts towards giving equal rights to men and women, providing equal inheritance to sons and daughters in property, mandatory registration of marriage and divorce, and establishing clear legal provisions related to property and wills. Representatives from various communities, including Shri Rajesh John Paul from the Christian community, stated in their suggestions that marriage is considered an unbreakable bond created by God, which cannot be broken. Live-in relationships cannot be accepted by society.

Smt. Varnika Sharma, Chairperson of the State Child Protection Commission, was also present at this important meeting and shared her views on various aspects related to children's rights and social security. The committee members listened to all the suggestions presented by the representatives with utmost seriousness and sensitivity. They assured that all these important practical facts and suggestions received from various social groups would be analyzed in depth to prepare an inclusive, balanced, and fair draft.

In the meeting, senior advocate Shri Brijesh Pandey of the Bar Association, President of the Bar Association Shri Dinesh Dewangan, President of the Bar Council Shri Pramod Tiwari, and Senior Vice President Smt. Bharti Rathore emphasized making the provisions of the Uniform Civil Code more effective, clear, and transparent and presented their suggestions. In the second session of the discussion meeting, President of Kanyakubj Brahmin Samaj Dr. Suresh Mishra and Shri Ashish Bajpayee recorded their views and opinions on the Uniform Civil Code before the committee. Similarly, representatives from the Medical Association, Dr. Kuldeep Solanki, Dr. Surabhi Dubey, and Dr. K. P. Ajmani, gave their opinions regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and provided suggestions to the members of the high-level committee.
