Four Golds for India, No Government Job: Amardeep’s Fight for Support

Amardeep Kumar’s record reads like a trophy case: four international gold medals in throw‑ball, earned between 2015 and 2026. Despite this, the Ranchi‑based athlete still scrapes a living by weighing vegetables on a roadside scale and ferrying passengers in a private cab.

His journey began in 2010, when he first tried the sport in school. By 2015 he was on the junior Asian stage, and subsequent victories in Kathmandu, Bengaluru and a second South Asian championship cemented his status as a top performer. However, his sport’s marginal status in India’s sports policy has left him without a salaried post in the government sector.

Amardeep applied several times for a sports‑department job, only to be told that the lack of Olympic inclusion means limited recruitment. After a viral video of him selling greens caught public attention, the state’s chief minister ordered the sports ministry to intervene. Amardeep now seeks a guaranteed appointment and regular cash assistance, arguing that such support would allow him to aim for more medals without the distraction of daily wage work.
