IMD Alerts Indicate Dry Conditions in Delhi on August 28, Heavy Showers Elsewhere

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a weather bulletin that spells out a dry day for India's capital on Raksha Bandhan, 28 August. Temperatures in Delhi are expected to swing between a high of 34 °C and a low of 26 °C, with no rain in the forecast for the day. The dryness is projected to stay in place through 1 September.

However, the rest of the country is set for a different story. In the Himalayan region, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Gilgit‑Baltistan may face significant rainfall on 31 August and 1 September. The city of Muzaffarpur is also listed for heavy rain on those dates. Uttarakhand will remain under a rain watch from 27 August through 1 September, and both western and eastern Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience heavy showers on 27 August, with the south‑west region expecting very heavy downpours.

Central India—Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Vidarbha region—will see rain beginning 27 August. Western Madhya Pradesh could be hit by intense rain, while the eastern part of the state and Chhattisgarh may continue to receive showers until the beginning of September. Thunder and lightning are predicted across these areas.

East India’s states, including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim and the Andaman‑Nicobar islands, are under a rain alert from 27 August to 1 September. Bihar is on the radar for rain on both 27 and 29 August, whereas Odisha may endure very heavy rain from 29 August to 1 September, with wind velocities of 40‑50 km/h and gusts possibly touching 60 km/h.

The northeast remains volatile. Arunachal Pradesh and the Assam‑Meghalaya combination are likely to see heavy rain between 27 August and 1 September. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura have similar expectations, with thunderstorms forecast between the 27th and 30th.

Western and southern coastal zones are not immune. Goa, Gujarat, central Maharashtra, Marathwada and the Sorath‑Kutch strip could experience rain from 27 August to 1 September. In the south, Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala are all forecast for rain, with the possibility of thunderstorms and strong gusts.

The maritime advisory also cautions fishermen to avoid the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Mannar Gulf until 31 August because of rough seas and high winds.
