Lidar Mapping to Verify Real‑World Property Use in Raipur

Raipur’s municipal body announced that it will employ LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to carry out a city‑wide property audit. The high‑resolution survey, slated to start in early October, will capture three‑dimensional data of more than 12,000 structures that are currently recorded as residential.

The data will be cross‑checked with on‑ground verification by a dedicated team led by the Revenue Deputy Commissioner. Inspectors will confirm whether a building hosts a shop, restaurant, coaching centre or any other commercial operation and will ensure that the appropriate tax class is applied.

Properties found to be running commercial activities while paying residential rates will receive a demand notice for the higher tax bracket and a penalty. Officials estimate that correcting these discrepancies could recover up to ten crore rupees in lost revenue each year.

Amid the technical rollout, municipal politicians are exchanging accusations. While the ruling side emphasizes fiscal responsibility, the opposition claims the city’s basic services are being ignored.
