In Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, a new case of online fraud has emerged, where a woman was deceived out of ₹18 lakh under the guise of marriage. The perpetrator, posing as a UK resident, befriended the victim on a Bharat Matrimony site and subsequently swindled her. Following the realization of the fraud, the aggrieved woman reported the incident to the police station.
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Khamhardih police station. The complainant, a 38-year-old resident of Bhawna Nagar, Khamhardih, stated in her complaint that she had uploaded her bio-data on a matrimonial site. On May 19, 2025, she connected with the accused, Dr. Shiva Kumar, also known as Surendra. Shiva presented himself as a UK resident and proposed marriage. This led to extensive communication between them.
Subsequently, the accused expressed his intention to travel to Raipur to meet her and discuss the marriage. On May 22, he contacted her, claiming to be at Delhi airport, where he was allegedly detained by customs officials. He requested ₹18 lakh to secure his release. Falling for Shiva Kumar’s deception, the woman transferred ₹18 lakh to various accounts.
After receiving the money, the accused turned off his phone. The woman attempted to contact Shiva Kumar multiple times, but his number remained switched off. Feeling betrayed, she reported the incident to the police station. A case has been registered at the Khamhardih police station under Section 318-4 of the BNS, and an investigation has been initiated to locate the accused.
