The incidence of Tomato Flu is rapidly spreading in the Bilaspur district. A significant number of children, ranging from nine months to seven years old, are falling prey to this new disease. The affected children are experiencing symptoms like fever, abdominal pain, red rashes on hands, feet, and back, and mouth ulcers. Parents are increasingly taking their children to both government and private hospitals for treatment.
According to Dr. Lakhan Singh, the Superintendent of SIMS, while there has been an increase in flu cases at the hospital, the cases haven’t been confirmed as Tomato Flu. Tomato Flu is a self-limiting illness, typically resolving on its own within a few days. However, general medications and rest are recommended to alleviate the symptoms. Experts advise that children experiencing severe symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. Schools are identified as hotspots for the spread of the disease. Parents are being advised by school management and teachers to keep children at home if they exhibit symptoms. Doctors recommend keeping children away from school for a minimum of 7 to 10 days, allowing them to fully recover before returning.
The name ‘Tomato Flu’ originates from the red, tomato-like rashes that appear on the skin of affected children. This viral infection spreads rapidly among younger children. Experts are urging parents to maintain strict hygiene and carefully monitor their children’s diet to prevent infection. Doctors reassure that the disease is not life-threatening, but caution that vigilance is crucial due to the potential for transmission. Children should avoid crowded places, and medical attention should be sought immediately upon the onset of symptoms. Doctors also suggest rest at home in case of any viral infection.
