Uttar Pradesh is bracing for an intense spell of heatwave conditions as the atmospheric patterns shift over Northern India. While the southwest monsoon has made its initial appearance in the Andaman and Nicobar regions, the plains of UP are currently being scorched by hot and dry westerly winds. The IMD has issued an orange alert for several parts of the state, particularly targeting the southern districts where severe heatwave conditions are imminent. In cities like Lucknow, Noida, and Ghaziabad, the mercury has already begun its steady climb, with temperatures hovering around 40°C. Meteorologists explain that the moist easterly winds which provided some humidity have now been replaced by parched winds coming from the desert regions. This change is expected to drive temperatures up to 44°C between May 19 and May 22. The state government and health departments are advising residents to take precautions against heatstroke. The heat is not just limited to the daytime; night temperatures are also expected to remain significantly above normal, providing little relief even after sunset.
