Congress Lawmaker Calls for Suspension Motion Over Jantar Mantar Crackdown

New Delhi, August 7 – Manikam Tagore B, a member of the Congress party, has written to the Lok Sabha Secretary seeking permission to introduce a suspension motion so that the house can deliberate on the police response to a student rally at Jantar Mantar on July 20, 2026. The MP also demands that Home Minister Amit Shah appear before the Parliament to give a comprehensive statement on the episode.

The letter outlines serious allegations that police used excessive force, including lathi‑charges, pellet guns, tear‑gas and water‑cannon fire against unarmed demonstrators, some of whom were women. Tagore emphasizes the need for an independent and timely inquiry into the approval process for the use of force, its legality, and the extent of injuries suffered by protesters.

Specific queries raised include: Who authorized the operation? Were the crowd‑control measures consistent with established legal standards? How many students were injured, detained or charged? What mechanisms exist for addressing complaints of police misconduct, and have any actions been taken against offending officers? Tagore also requests information on the FIRs filed, the charges levied and the justification for any criminal prosecution.

He urges the government to withdraw all FIRs against the students, to guarantee that peaceful protest will not trigger criminal proceedings, and to engage in dialogue rather than coercion. Should the investigation reveal unwarranted force, Tagore asks that the Prime Minister express regret in Parliament and formally apologize to the affected demonstrators.
