Former parliamentarian ST Hasan has accused the ruling dispensation of weaponizing communal issues to sideline pressing national priorities. In an interview with IANS in Muradabad, the Samajwadi Party leader said that instead of focusing on unemployment, agrarian distress and quality education, political discourse has narrowed to Hindu-Muslim binaries. Hasan warned that this deliberate distraction harms social cohesion and distracts from governance failures. Reacting to Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane’s statement on “virtual Bakrid,” Hasan highlighted what he called hypocrisy, claiming Rane’s family has long been associated with the meat trade. He reminded citizens that Eid-ul-Adha symbolizes sacrifice and humanity, calling for celebrations that respect local laws and do not inconvenience residents. Hasan stressed that banned animals must not be sacrificed and urged political parties to return to substantive issues that affect daily life.
