Conrad Sangma Launches 95 Police Vehicles in Meghalaya Boost

Meghalaya's push for stronger policing took center stage as Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched a comprehensive new fleet of 95 police vehicles in Shillong on Thursday. Designed to enhance mobility, operational efficiency, and rapid emergency response, the move signals the state's commitment to robust law enforcement. Held at the Golf Links Police Officers' Mess, the event drew DGP I. Nongrang, top bureaucrats, and officers. The fleet, costing approximately 30 crore rupees, features 20 Maruti Jimnys for rugged terrain, 19 Tata Troop Carriers, five Mahindra Mini Trucks, plus various capacity buses – 19 for 20 officers, 10 for 24, and eight for 36 – alongside eight specialized Tata Yodhas for CID operations. Notably, 79 vehicles were funded via the Central scheme for state police assistance. In his keynote address, Sangma stressed that law and order forms the bedrock of governance, demanding unwavering focus and investment. He detailed the government's modernization drive, including the Police Reserve Fund for infrastructure upgrades and empowered local commanders to accelerate improvements to once-decrepit facilities. The CM spotlighted a major recruitment drive filling over 3,000 vacancies, a critical manpower infusion. He lauded the police's role in calming recent unrest in West Jaintia Hills' Lapangap while negotiations with Assam on interstate borders continue. Special praise went to DGP Nongrang for leading with professionalism, ensuring statewide stability. This strategic fleet addition promises to revolutionize police dynamics in Meghalaya, equipping forces with modern tools to tackle threats effectively and maintain public trust in governance.
