Curriculum Committee Sets Long-Term Roadmap for Future Generations

In Kolkata on Tuesday, the School Education Minister of West Bengal joined the inaugural session of the Curriculum Committee, chaired by Professor Kalyan Chakravarty, to chart a long‑term educational strategy. Present alongside him were the State Minister for School Education and the Education Secretary.

The committee’s mandate is to devise a roadmap that aligns school content with the developmental needs of today’s youth and the generations to follow. Existing textbooks will stay in circulation while a systematic review is scheduled for the 2027 academic year; substantial curriculum shifts are earmarked for 2028.

Given the tight timeline, the 2027 syllabus will not be altered. Students will receive their textbooks before the state’s traditional “Book Day” on 2 January 2027. Once the 2028 syllabus draft is completed, it will be released for public scrutiny and feedback from political and student groups.

In accordance with the National Education Policy 2020, the upcoming curriculum may re‑introduce semester‑based learning and a pass‑fail grading scheme, with a firm commitment to keep political considerations out of the academic content.

The minister also noted that English‑medium schools inaugurated during the previous administration will continue, with ongoing assessments to improve their quality. Discussions are also under way to make Sanskrit more mainstream and to evaluate the suitability of recent regional historical events for inclusion in textbooks.
