With Delhi grappling under severe air pollution, the Supreme Court has urged the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to recommend schools in the Delhi-NCR region to defer sports activities and competitions scheduled for November and December. The apex court emphasized that these events can be rescheduled for a later date, once the city’s air quality shows improvement. The bench highlighted the critical need for proactive measures from authorities to combat pollution, ensuring that all stakeholder perspectives are considered. Additionally, the court mandated that cases related to air pollution be reviewed monthly. In a significant move to support those affected by pollution control measures, the Supreme Court ordered that construction workers impacted by GRAP-3 restrictions in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan receive a subsistence allowance. The states have been directed to maintain and regularly assess their pollution-prevention strategies.
