The Delhi government has temporarily suspended the directive preventing fuel sales to End-of-Life (EOL) vehicles within the city. This decision follows a request from Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), citing several technical problems with the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. The ANPR cameras, intended to identify non-compliant vehicles, have been plagued by glitches, including malfunctioning sensors and speakers, and have not been integrated with NCR data. Furthermore, the policy is not yet implemented in neighboring areas like Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. Former Delhi CM Atishi criticized the move, questioning the government’s consistency and suggesting possible collusion with car manufacturers. A vehicle owner expressed support for measures addressing vehicle pollution, urging similar actions in other major cities.
