The DMK has criticized Uttar Pradesh for considering a law granting married daughters equal rights to their fathers’ agricultural land, stating that Tamil Nadu had enacted such a law 35 years prior. In 1989, Tamil Nadu passed a law providing women with equal rights to property. The DMK’s official mouthpiece, ‘Murasoli,’ highlighted that Uttar Pradesh is now recognizing what the late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi did 35 years ago by amending the Hindu Succession Act (Tamil Nadu Amendment). The editorial also referenced the early advocacy for women’s property rights, mentioning Periyar E.V. Ramasamy’s efforts nearly a century ago. The DMK argues that Uttar Pradesh is lagging behind, emphasizing the need for the state government to overcome any opposition and ensure women receive their rightful entitlements.
