A vehicle registered in Dubai has become the subject of an investigation in Kochi after it was observed racing through Edappally with a modified exhaust system that emitted flames. The car’s loud noise and fire display immediately drew public attention, with videos quickly circulating on social media. This unusual sight prompted the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) to launch an investigation into potential illegal modifications and violations of Indian motor vehicle regulations. Authorities suspect the car may be equipped with aftermarket exhaust systems and performance enhancements, which are not only sources of noise pollution but also present safety risks. Such modifications are illegal under existing High Court guidelines, which prohibit alterations that compromise a vehicle’s emission levels or structural integrity under Indian law. Further scrutiny is being given to the car’s import status, as foreign-registered vehicles imported into India, even temporarily, must adhere to local traffic and modification rules. The MVD is examining whether the Dubai-plated car received any exemptions or clearances and whether the modifications were made before or after its entry into India. Officials have already used traffic camera footage and witness accounts to identify the vehicle’s model and owner. If regulatory violations are confirmed, the car could face severe penalties, including impoundment or fines under the Motor Vehicles Act. This incident has reignited the debate surrounding modified luxury vehicles and street racing culture in Indian cities. Experts are advocating for stricter inspections at ports and closer collaboration between state traffic departments and customs authorities to combat illegal imports and dangerous driving practices on Indian roads.
