EC Accused of Mishandling Voter Roll Additions, Rahul Gandhi Reacts

Rahul Gandhi used his parliamentary platform on Wednesday to highlight what he sees as a failure of the Election Commission to safeguard the integrity of the voter roll. He pointed to reports that two senior election commissioners allegedly voiced concerns over the addition of new voters and the deletion of existing ones.

Describing the situation as “a direct attack on the Constitution,” Gandhi warned that the commission’s inaction could provoke a crisis of legitimacy for future elections. “We will not grant you any reprieve,” he said.

The controversy erupted after a leading newspaper claimed the commissioners formally objected to 14 decisions made by the commission over ten months. The ECI quickly refuted the story, asserting that no official objections were logged, only informal observations later reviewed by the body.

Gandhi’s remarks have intensified calls for greater transparency within the electoral apparatus, as opposition parties demand an independent audit of the voter‑list management process.
