E‑Commerce Council of India set to foster policy dialogue and innovation

On July 17, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) introduced the E‑Commerce Council of India (ECCI), marking the first national forum that unites government, industry and key players to nurture India’s $120 billion digital commerce landscape.

ECCI’s mission is to create a more transparent and competitive environment by driving policy research, encouraging innovation and enhancing industry‑government communication. The council will address emerging sectors such as AI‑driven commerce, direct‑to‑consumer brands, travel technology, logistics, and cross‑border trade.

Keynote economist Dr. Lavish Bhandari stressed that the sector’s next growth wave will rely on collaborative effort across the industry. He advocated for a shared voice on policy matters to achieve regulatory clarity and a business climate that benefits consumers, merchants and the national economy.

The council’s roster features leading digital firms — Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Uber, Tata 1MG, eBay and several Indian startups — all committed to advancing strategic pillars like MSME integration, digital payments, consumer trust, logistics efficiency and responsible commerce.

ECCI also plans to launch an annual Indian E‑Commerce Summit, providing a platform for policymakers, industry leaders, academicians and global experts to discuss trends, challenges and opportunities in digital trade.

IAMAI, founded in 2004 with a membership exceeding 800 companies, continues its advocacy for a robust digital economy, fair competition, supportive regulation, startup growth and strong consumer protection.
