India witnessed grand yet peaceful celebrations of Eid-ul-Adha, popularly called Bakrid, on May 28. Faithful assembled in large numbers at mosques and open grounds to offer special prayers, dressed in new clothes and carrying the spirit of sacrifice and gratitude. The day also highlighted the importance of charity, as many distributed meat and food among the needy, embodying the core values of the festival. Religious scholars explained that the occasion revives the memory of Prophet Ibrahim’s ultimate test of faith and the divine command he received. Security remained a top priority. In Delhi, heavy police deployment around Jama Masjid ensured smooth proceedings. Entry protocols were strictly followed, and surveillance was increased at sensitive locations across the country. Although the majority of states celebrated on Thursday, some areas observed the festival on Wednesday due to varying moon-sighting reports. The lunar cycle once again determined the timing, underscoring the astronomical basis of Islamic festivals. Leaders across communities praised the peaceful conduct and reiterated that such festivals strengthen India’s social fabric by fostering unity and understanding among diverse populations.
