Experts Discuss Early Detection of Childhood NCDs at AIIMS Nagpur Workshop

A panel of public‑health experts gathered at AIIMS Nagpur to examine how non‑communicable diseases manifest among children in India’s tribal, rural and urban settings. Participants noted that in remote villages, limited laboratory services and scarce specialists often mean that NCDs are only recognised when complications become severe. In contrast, urban centres are witnessing a surge in lifestyle‑related conditions driven by sedentary habits, excessive screen time and dietary shifts.

The discussion underscored the importance of integrating NCD screening into existing immunisation and school health programmes. Dr Joshi urged policymakers to allocate resources for regular growth monitoring, blood‑sugar checks and mental‑health assessments, arguing that early action can prevent lifelong disability.

The workshop concluded with a consensus to develop community‑based education campaigns that empower parents and teachers to spot early warning signs.
