Future of Pattinamakkam Secretariat Uncertain as Review Continues

Chennai, September 24 – The plan to build a new secretariat in Pattinamakkam is still under assessment, according to statements made by Minister Nirmal Kumar. He clarified that no final decision has been taken regarding the continuation or cancellation of the project.

The scheme originally earmarked a 15‑storey structure on a 25‑acre parcel, with an estimated cost of 1,200 crore rupees. Land acquisition procedures had entered the initial phase, and the Public Works Department was expected to submit a detailed project report.

Local fishermen and certain political groups have objected, citing concerns that the construction could endanger their traditional fishing grounds and affect their livelihoods. These protests have turned the proposal into a subject of public debate.

The government is said to be weighing alternative locations inside Chennai, but no concrete site has been confirmed. Residents await clear guidance on whether the project will move forward, relocate, or be shelved.
