The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is considering a plan to construct an elevated corridor along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), modeled after the Dwarka Expressway. This development aims to streamline travel between Delhi and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, eliminating the need for traffic signals and circumventing city congestion. Officials revealed that a consultant was engaged this year to prepare a detailed project report for the SPR’s renovation, specifically focusing on the 5.5-kilometer stretch from Vatika Chowk to NH-8. The consultant has already submitted the design for this section.
The proposed elevated corridor is envisioned as a six-lane structure, devoid of traffic signals, with strategically placed ramps for easy entry and exit. It will connect the Dwarka Expressway and NH-8 through the existing cloverleaf intersection, and also link to the Sohna Highway (part of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, NH-248A) at Vatika Chowk. This design promises seamless traffic flow, enabling commuters to travel smoothly from Shiv Murti in Delhi to NH-8 and NH-248A. Conversely, those traveling towards Delhi from the Sohna Highway will also benefit from unobstructed access to their destinations.
The project, initially conceived in 2019, faced delays before gaining momentum. In 2022, administrative approval was granted for the construction of eight flyovers and the expansion of the SPR to six lanes; however, this proposal was later abandoned due to perceived low traffic density. Subsequently, then-Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar directed the GMDA to revise the design and establish a direct elevated road connecting NH-248A to NH-8 and the Dwarka Expressway. Current Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini approved the elevated corridor’s construction in July 2024. The GMDA board has allocated Rs 750 crore for the project, with Rs 620 crore earmarked for construction and Rs 130 crore for land acquisition. Local residents have emphasized the urgency of the SPR’s redevelopment.
