Gram Panchayats in UP to Run on Existing Leadership

Lucknow: In a move aimed at preventing administrative vacuum, the Uttar Pradesh government has authorised sitting gram pradhans to serve as administrators until new panchayat elections are conducted. The order, issued by the Panchayati Raj department, will come into effect from 27 May. The five-year term of panchayats constituted in 2021 concludes on 26 May 2026. Because the State Election Commission still needs time to finalise voter lists and complete reservation procedures, the state has invoked provisions allowing an interim extension of up to six months or until the first meeting of newly elected bodies. Pradhans will be allowed to execute only day-to-day functions. Large-scale spending decisions or policy changes require prior clearance from district authorities. The government’s priority is to keep welfare programmes, sanitation works and employment schemes running smoothly. Analysts say the decision may strengthen the position of incumbent pradhans by giving them additional months to demonstrate governance and build voter goodwill before the next round of panchayat elections.
